Marius Staring is Hoogleraar Machine Learning voor Medische Beeldanalyse bij de Afdeling Radiologie van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC), en vice-directeur van het Laboratorium voor Klinische en Experimentele Beeldverwerking (LKEB). Hij is Associate Editor van het vakblad IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, en lid van de programma comités van MICCAI, IEEE ISBI, SPIE Medical Imaging en WBIR.

Medische Beeldanalyse
Moderne Medicijnen wordt in toenemende mate gedreven door informatie en data, waarvan beelddata zoals CT en MRI een zeer belangrijke component is: het stelt in staat te zien wat anders onzichtbaar is. Radiologen en andere artsen analyseren de beschikbare data om een diagnose te kunnen stellen, de patiënt te voorzien van een prognose, of om een behandeling te begeleiden. Computers en in het bijzonder Machine Learning methodes blinken uit in dergelijke analyses, en maken kwantitatief wat nu nog kwalitatief of subjectief is. Bovendien doen ze dit tegen lage kosten en op een schaal wat niet voor mensen mogelijk is. Deze methodes zijn daarom cruciaal om de groeiend zorgkosten van onze verouderende maatschappij in te perken. Het doel van deze leerstoel is om innovatieve machine learning oplossingen te ontwikkelen voor complexe medische beeldanalyse uitdagingen, om zo een kosteneffectief en hoge kwaliteit zorgstelsel mogelijk te maken.
Marius Staring en zijn team hebben bijvoorbeeld machine learning software gemaakt om automatisch de tumor en risico-organen in te tekenen op CT beelden. Die worden gebruikt om de dosisafzetting te berekenen voor een bestralingsbehandeling, en is op dit moment een tijdrovend en duur proces. Daarnaast, in samenwerking met MR fysici en Philips, hebben ze een MR beeldreconstructie algoritme ontwikkeld op basis van machine learning. Daardoor kan een MR scan in een derde van de tijd opgenomen worden, wat erg fijn is voor de patiënt en ook de zorgkosten drukt.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Marius Staring heeft een Master of Science in de Toegepaste Wiskunde van de Universiteit Twente, en een doctoraat van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht. Hij verdedigde zijn proefschrift getiteld “Intrasubject Registration for Change Analysis in Medical Imaging” op 9 oktober 2008. Daarna ging hij werken bij het LUMC, eerst als postdoctoraal onderzoeker en daarna als universitair docent (2013), hoofddocent (2018) en hoogleraar (2022). Hij hield zijn inaugurele rede op 3 november 2023.
