Johanna (Joke) Meijer is hoogleraar en hoofd van de sectie Neurofysiologie, binnen de afdeling Cel en Chemische Biologie. Haar onderzoek richt zich voornamelijk op het ontrafelen van de mechanismen die de biologische klok reguleren en synchroniseren, zowel door externe als interne factoren. Daarnaast onderzoekt ze de klinische implicaties van een verstoorde biologische klok, zoals vermoeidheid gerelateerd aan kanker. Ze heeft een landelijk programma opgezet, waarbij acht Nederlandse universiteiten betrokken zijn, om de effecten van verstoringen van de biologische klok op de menselijke gezondheid en biodiversiteit te bestuderen. Meijer ontving in 2016 de Aschoff en Honma Prijs en kreeg in 2019 een subsidie van de European Research Council.

Biologische klok
Circadiane ritmes zijn ontstaan als een aanpassing aan de terugkerende veranderingen in de omgeving, die worden veroorzaakt door de draaiing van de aarde. Om op deze veranderingen te kunnen anticiperen, hebben alle organismen aangeboren klokken ontwikkeld. Meijer bestudeert de neurofysiologische basis die ten grondslag ligt aan de aanpassing van de biologische klok aan de 24-uurs cyclus van de omgeving en aan de seizoensgebonden veranderingen in daglengte.
Zij heeft een breed scala aan kleuren geïdentificeerd die de klok beïnvloeden, waaronder UV-licht, en de effecten daarvan op de elektrische activiteit van klokneuronen beschreven. Daarnaast ontdekte ze de neurotransmitter die betrokken is bij foto-entrainment (glutamaat) en de neurotransmitter die een rol speelt bij fasevorming tussen de ventrale en dorsale klokgebieden (GABA). Ze ontwikkelde in vivo opnames, waarmee de eigenschappen van de biologische klok als integraal onderdeel van het centrale zenuwstelsel worden onderzocht. Haar ontdekkingen zijn bekroond met de Aschoff en Honma Prijs, de meest prestigieuze erkenning op het gebied van onderzoek naar biologische ritmes.
Belangrijkste ontdekkingen
- Identificatie van het mechanisme voor fotoperiodische codering door de centrale klok.
- Identificatie van de neurotransmitter glutamaat voor de synchronisatie met de externe licht-donker cyclus en de neurotransmitter GABA voor de interne synchronisatie binnen de centrale klok.
- Ontdekking van de rol van kortegolf-fotoreceptoren bij foto-entrainment.
- Identificatie van de respons van de centrale klok van mensen op blauw, groen en rood licht via fMRI.
- Identificatie van de respons van de centrale klok op fysieke activiteit.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Meijer studeerde aan de Universiteit Leiden in Nederland, waar ze haar masterdiploma (cum laude) behaalde aan de faculteit Biologie, Natuurkunde en Geneeskunde. In 1989 promoveerde zij (cum laude) in de Medische Wetenschappen. Ze ontving een fellowship van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen en werd in 2007 benoemd tot hoogleraar Neurofysiologie.
Als hoogleraar en hoofd van de Neurofysiologie Groep aan het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum in Nederland heeft Meijer haar onderzoek naar circadiane ritmes en chronobiologie verder ontwikkeld. Daarnaast was ze gasthoogleraar aan de afdeling Oogheelkunde van de Universiteit van Oxford in het Verenigd Koninkrijk
