Onderzoek naar trauma
Mouthaans onderzoek richt zich op preventie en voorspelling van psychologische reacties op trauma. Daarnaast onderzoekt ze suïcidepreventie, het welzijn van studenten en technologische innovaties in (de opleiding van) de GGZ, bijvoorbeeld via e-health en e-learning.
In 2015 ontving ze de Jan van Dijk Victimology and Victims' Rights Award voor haar proefschrift "Injured Bodies, Injured Souls?" over de voorspelling en preventie van traumagerelateerde psychologische symptomen na letsel.
Ze maakt deel uit van het International Consortium on Prediction of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (ICPP) en de CONNECT Research Group onder het ADJUST Study Consortium over psychosociale reacties van de COVID-19 pandemie.
Projecten
Joanne Mouthaan is projectleider van het project E-learning Suïcidepreventievaardigheden voor psychologen in opleiding als onderdeel van de Derde Landelijke Agenda Suïcidepreventie 2021-2025. Samen met dr. Vivian Kraaij ontving Mouthaan subsidie voor de ontwikkeling van een e-learning voor online behandelvaardigheden (FSW Grass Shoots, 2018).
Onderwijs
Als onderwijscoördinator van de afdeling ziet ze toe op de coördinatie van het onderwijs van de sectie Klinische Psychologie in het bachelor, master en post-master curriculum. Ze doceert theoretische, methodologische en klinische vaardigheden, begeleidt bachelor- en masterscripties en coördineert de master-keuzevakken E-health Interventions in Mental Health Care en Trauma and Mental Health.

Joanne Mouthaan is voorzitter van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Psychotrauma (NtVP), voorzitter van de European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS), en redactielid van het European Journal for Psychotraumatology.
