Joachim A. Koops is hoogleraar Security. Zijn onderzoek draait om het thema Global Security Governance. Zo onderzoekt hij het buitenlandse en veiligheidsbeleid van de Europese Unie en de rol van de Verenigde Naties, de Europese Unie en de NAVO (en hun onderlinge relaties) in tijd van vrede en veiligheid. Daarnaast richt hij zich op onderwerpen als crisis management, vredeshandhaving, de verantwoordelijkheid om burgers te beschermen (R2P) en de veranderende rol van diplomatie. Op administratief vlak is Koops geïnteresseerd in het aanhalen van onderlinge relaties op academisch gebied en innovatie en vernieuwing van het hoger onderwijs.
