Guus Kroonen is docent en onderzoeker in Scandinavische, Germaanse en Indo-Europese vergelijkende taalwetenschap. Zijn onderzoek richt zich onder meer op de etymologie, de reconstructie en de opsplitsing van de Indo-Europese talen, maar ook op prehistorisch taalcontact en de prehistorische verspreiding van de Indo-Europese talen. Hij heeft meerdere extern-gefinancierde onderzoeksprojecten geleid, waaronder een ERC Starting Grant en een NWO Promoties in de Geesteswetenschappen. Hij heeft ervaring als begeleider van promotieonderzoeken op het gebied van verschillende Indo-Europese talen, waaronder het Italisch, Balto-Slavisch, Armeens en Indo-Iraans. Door middel van samenwerkingen met archeologen en genetici probeert hij bij te dragen aan de ontwikkeling van nieuwe onderzoekslijnen op het grensvlak van taalkunde, genetica en archeologie.
