Geert-Jan Will is een Marie-Sklodowska-Curie “LEaDing” Fellow op de afdeling Klinische Psychologie van de Universiteit Leiden. Hij studeerde Psychologie (B. Sc.) en Neurowetenschappen (M. Sc.) aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Hij promoveerde aan de Universiteit Leiden onder begeleiding van prof. dr. Eveline Crone en prof. dr. Berna Güroğlu op onderzoek naar de invloed van sociale afwijzing op sociaal gedrag in de adolescentie. Vervolgens deed hij postdoctoraal onderzoek in de groep van prof. dr. Ray Dolan aan University College London naar hoe ons zelfbeeld bepaald wordt door wat andere mensen van ons denken. Hij ontving een Marie Skłodowska-Curie “LEaDing” fellowship om samen met prof. dr. Bernet Elzinga in Leiden de hersenmechanismen te onderzoeken die ten grondslag liggen aan problemen in het zelfbeeld van pubers met een depressie.
Onderzoek
Hoe worden onze gedachten, gevoelens en gedrag gevormd door onze sociale ervaringen? Deze vraag onderzoek ik met behulp van vragenlijsten, smartphone apps, gedragsexperimenten, wiskundige modellen van hersenfunctie, scans van de hersenen en farmacologische interventies. Ik combineer deze methoden met maten van sociale ervaringen in het echte leven om beter te begrijpen hoe negatieve ervaringen zoals sociale afwijzing en uitsluiting kunnen leiden tot psychiatrische problemen zoals depressie.
