Egbert Fortuin is hoogleraar Russische taal en taalkunde. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op semantiek, syntaxis en pragmatiek. Voor zijn onderzoek gebruikt hij vaak data uit een corpus. Hoewel zijn primaire focus op het Russisch ligt, doet hij ook onderzoek in de typologie en contrastieve taalkunde. Hij werkt daarnaast ook op het gebied van de filosofie van de taalkunde. Naast zijn onderzoek naar grammatica, is hij ook geïnteresseerd in de manier waarop taal wordt gebruikt en misbruikt in propaganda, bijvoorbeeld in de Russische propaganda in de huidige oorlog tegen Oekraïne.
