Cornelis H. (Ron) Hokke is hoogleraar Glycobiologie van Gastheer-Pathogeen Interactie en wetenschappelijk staflid van de afdeling Parasitologie van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum.
Glycobiologie van gastheer-pathogeen interactie
Alle pathogenen, van de kleinste microbe tot de grootste parasitaire worm, gaan interacties met ons aan door gebruik te maken van moleculaire suikerverbindingen, glycanen genoemd. Ons afweersysteem reageert op glycanen van bijvoorbeeld bacteriën en parasieten, en sommige virussen gebruiken de glycanen op onze cellen om aan te hechten. Glycanen en hun bindingspartners zoals lectines en antilichamen spelen daarom een essentiële rol in infecties. Ze vormen daarmee belangrijke aangrijpingspunten voor de ontwikkeling van geneesmiddelen, vaccins en diagnostische methoden. Centraal in mijn leerstoel staat het fascinerende, innovatieve onderzoeksveld dat zich hiermee bezighoudt: de glycobiologie van gastheer-pathogeen interactie. De belangrijkste onderzoekslijnen omvatten de ontwikkeling van op glycoconjugaten gebaseerde vaccins en diagnostica om wereldwijd zeer belangrijke wormeninfecties als schistosomiasis te kunnen bestrijden, en de identificatie van immunomodulatoire parasitaire glycoconjugaten als nieuwe therapeutica om allergische of ontstekingsziekten te bestrijden.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Cornelis Hokke heeft zijn opleiding Scheikunde en zijn promotie onderzoek gedaan aan de Universiteit Utrecht. De titel van zijn proefschrift (1993) luidt ‘Structure determination of glycoprotein glycans’. Vervolgens ontwikkelde hij zich op basis van zijn biochemische achtergrond in de medische glycobiologie op de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Vlak voor het jaar 2000 kwam hij naar de afdeling Parasitologie op het LUMC om zijn glycobiologische kennis te toe te passen in studies naar parasitaire infecties en een fascinatie te ontwikkelen voor de glycobiologie van gastheer-pathogeen interactie. Hij werd in maart 2017 benoemd tot hoogleraar bij het LUMC op de gelijknamige leerstoel.
Prijzen en eervolle benoemingen
Cornelis Hokke heeft inmiddels > 125 publicaties op het gebied van de glycobiologie en/of parasitologie op zijn naam staan. Van 2007 tot 2011 was Cornelis Hokke voorzitter van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Glycobiologie. Hij is en was actief in de organisatie van meerdere nationale en internationale symposia op het gebied van glycobiologie en van de parasitologie. Op dit moment zit hij in de redactieraad van de vaktijdschriften Glycoconjugate Journal en Parasitology International, waarmee zijn bijzondere combinatie van expertise in de glycobiologie en de parasitologie nog eens wordt onderstreept.
