Christa Cobbaert is laboratoriumspecialist Klinische Chemie en Laboratoriumgeneeskunde, alsook hoofd van de afdeling Klinische Chemie en Laboratorium-geneeskunde van het LUMC, Leiden. Zij is vicevoorzitter van de Wetenschappelijke Divisie van de Internationale Federatie van Klinische Chemie en voorzitter van de Test Evaluatie werkgroep van de Europese Federatie van Laboratoriumgeneeskunde. Zij is een expert op het gebied van metrologie, met name de kunst van het meten, hetgeen essentieel is voor mondiale standaardisatie c.q. harmonisatie van medische testen.

Precisiediagnostiek en P4-geneeskunde
De meeste diagnoses en behandelingen worden gesteld op geleide van medische test resultaten. Dientengevolge dienen de medische testen en de diagnostische pathways zowel state-of-the-art als innovatief te zijn, tegemoetkomend aan de onvervulde klinische behoeften. Daarnaast dienen de diagnostische processen continu verbeterd te worden, met streven naar 6 sigma kwaliteit en operationele excellentie.
In samenwerking met cardiologen, nefrologen, oncologen, het Centrum voor Proteomics en Metabolomics en/of IVD-fabrikanten zoekt zij naar meer effectieve medische testen met deep proteomics. Verschillende proteoforms worden hierbij geëvalueerd. Haar onderzoek draagt bij aan Precisiediagnostiek en aan P4-geneeskunde (d.w.z. Preventief, Predictief, Gepersonaliseerd, met Participatie van de Patiënt).
Medische testen dienen accuraat te zijn en wereldwijd alsook met verloop van tijd, vergelijkbare resultaten te geven. Om dat te bereiken is standaardisatie en harmonisatie van medische testen op internationaal niveau essentieel. Met haar hoogleraarschap draagt Dr Cobbaert bij aan standaardisatie van testen, in het belang van metrologische traceerbaarheid van testresultaten t.b.v. betere patiëntenzorg. Mondiale vergelijkbaarheid van medische testresultaten is nodig voor universele toepassing van referentiewaarden, klinische beslisgrenzen en richtlijnen.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Christa Cobbaert studeerde Farmaceutische Wetenschappen aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in de periode 1977-1982. Vervolgens specialiseerde zij zich tot Apotheker-Specialist in de Biologische Ontledingen aan de UZ Leuven, Leuven, België in de periode 1982-1985. Dr. Cobbaert was staflid aan de UZ Leuven in de periode 1985-1992. In 1992-1998 was zij staflid aan het EMCR, Rotterdam, Nederland. Zij promoveerde op 8 oktober 1997 met een proefschrift getiteld: "The elusive Lp(a) lipoprotein: a cardiovascular risk factor after all?" In de periode 1998-2009 was zij hoofd van de afdeling klinische chemie in het Baronie Ziekenhuis, en later in het Amphia Ziekenhuis, Breda. Sinds 2009 is zij afdelingshoofd van de Afdeling Klinische Chemie en Laboratoriumgeneeskunde aan et LUMC. In juni 2015 werd zij benoemd tot hoogleraar Klinische Chemie en Laboratoriumgeneeskunde. Haar oratie vond plaats op 19 februari 2016, getiteld: ‘Laboratorium-geneeskunde: van evolutie naar revolutie’.
