Berthe Jansen is universitair docent Tibetaanse Studies aan de Universiteit Leiden. Ze heeft een doctoraat in boeddhistische studies van diezelfde universiteit. Jansen heeft brede academische interesses, maar de meeste hebben te maken met het raakpunt tussen religie en samenleving. Haar monografie The Monastery Rules: Tibetan Monastic Organization in Pre-modern Tibet verscheen in 2018 bij University of California Press. Jansen kreeg een NWO Veni-subsidie om de relatie tussen boeddhisme en recht in het premoderne Tibet te onderzoeken (2016-2022). Ze is nu de PI van het ERC Starting Grant Project Locating Literature, Lived Religion, and Lives in the Himalayas: The Van Manen Collection (2023-2028). Jansen is daarnaast vertaler en tolk van het (boeddhistische) Tibetaans en auteur van een kinderboek.
