Albert M. van Hemert is hoogleraar Psychiatrie, hoofd van de afdeling Psychiatrie van het LUMC en tevens voorzitter van Divisie 3. Hij is programmaleider van het onderzoeksprogramma Stress gerelateerde psychische stoornissen gedurende de levensloop. Hij is lid van het bestuur van het NESDA-consortium en van de LUMC Vrienden Stichting en hij is lid-beroepsgenoot van het Regionaal Tuchtcollege voor de Gezondheidszorg Den Haag.

Psychiatrie
Als psychiater-epidemioloog probeer ik onderzoek steeds te richten op het verdiepen van onze kennis van de psychiatrie, maar ook op verbetering van de patiëntenzorg, vooral in de vorm van vroegere interventies. In de loop van de jaren richtte mijn epidemiologische onderzoek zich op verschillende klinische vraagstukken. Het is daarbij steeds gelukt om de groei van kennis te combineren met innovaties voor de klinische praktijk.
In het huidige onderzoek concentreren wij ons op de ontregeling van emoties bij stemmingsstoornissen en andere stress gerelateerde psychische stoornissen. In de ingewikkelde interactie van biologische kwetsbaarheid, vroege jeugdervaringen en latere (traumatische) gebeurtenissen zoeken wij de patronen die richting kunnen geven aan zinvolle keuzes in preventie en klinische behandeling. De gangbare DSM-classificatie is daarvoor te grofmazig. De ervaring leert dat stoornissen die wij bestuderen zich voordoen in een spectrum van al of niet recidiverende afgegrensde episodes tot een veel langduriger, chronische beloopsvormen. Aan het ene einde van het spectrum moet behandeling zich meer richten op volledig herstel, aan het andere einde moeten nieuwe interventie worden ontwikkeld in de richting van (secundaire) preventie en rehabilitatie. Vroege detectie van chronisch beloop, gecombineerd met principes van ‘Balanced Care’ bieden daarbij een praktisch hulpmiddel. In nauwe samenwerking met het NESDA-consortium en de kinder- en jeugd psychiatrie zullen wij ons ook gaan richten op de transitie van jeugd naar volwassenheid in de vroege preventie van stress gerelateerde psychische stoornissen.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Albert M. van Hemert studeerde Geneeskunde bij de Erasmus Universiteit in Rotterdam (1977-1984), waar hij zich aansluitend specialiseerde in de Epidemiologie. Hij promoveerde in 1989 (titel: Epidemiology of Osteoporosis and the Prediction of fractures). Van 1988 tot 2003 werkte hij bij het LUMC, eerst als epidemioloog en later als psychiater. Zijn onderzoek richtte zich op de Verwevenheid van somatische en psychische stoornissen. Het onderzoek legde de basis voor de eerste evidence based cognitieve gedragstherapie (CGT) voor een somatisch onverklaarde lichamelijke klachten (SOLK) in Nederland. Van 1994 tot 1998 specialiseerde hij zich tot psychiater in het Haags-Leids Opleidingsconsortium Psychiatrie (HLOCP).
Van 2003 tot 2011 werkte hij de Parnassia Groep in Den Haag, als hoofd van de psychiatrische crisisdienst en opleider Sociale Psychiatrie. Het zwaartepunt van zijn onderzoek verschoof naar de Epidemiologie van de Openbare Geestelijke Gezondheidszorg (OGGZ). Hij legde de basis voor het psychiatrisch casusregister voor Den Haag en was nauw betrokken bij de Haagse Suïcide-Registratie van de GGD. Als methodiek voor gestructureerde toeleiding naar zorg bracht hij Critical Time Intervention naar Nederland. Hij was voorzitter van de werkgroep voor de Multidisciplinaire Richtlijn Diagnostiek en Behandeling van Suïcidaal Gedrag. In 2008 werd hij bij de LUMC afdeling Public Health en Eerstelijnsgeneeskunde benoemd als bijzonder hoogleraar Epidemiologie van de OGGZ (oratie: Sociale Psychiatrie in de 21e eeuw).
Sinds 2011 is Albert M. van Hemert terug in het LUMC als hoogleraar en afdelingshoofd Psychiatrie (oratie: Ontregelde Emoties). Zijn verantwoordelijkheid heeft zich verbreed naar de volle breedte van de patiëntenzorg, het onderwijs en het onderzoek in de Psychiatrie. In de kliniek en in zijn persoonlijke onderzoek ligt het accent op moeilijk behandelbare stemmingsstoornissen. Onder het motto Academisch sterk – Maatschappelijk betrokken streeft hij er steeds naar om meer fundamentele onderzoeken te verbinden met toepassing in de praktijk.
