Ben Van Rompuy is universitair hoofddocent Mededingingsrecht bij het Europa Instituut van de Universiteit Leiden.
Zijn onderzoeks- en onderwijsinteresses liggen voornamelijk op het gebied van het mededingingsrecht, in een Europees en rechtsvergelijkend perspectief, en het EU interne markt recht.
De focus van zijn huidige onderzoek is tweeledig. De eerste onderzoekslijn is empirisch georiënteerd en richt zich op de vraag hoe mededingingsautoriteiten gebruik maken van hun discretionaire bevoegdheden, met name bij het stellen van handhavingsprioriteiten. Ook wordt de rol van belanghebbende derden bij de handhaving van het EU-(mededingings)recht onderzocht. De tweede onderzoekslijn betreft de toepassing van het EU-mededingingsrecht op transnationale private regulering, wat leidt tot fundamentele vragen over de integratie van niet-economische publieke belangen. Sportbestuur dient hierbij als voornaamste case study.
Van Rompuy is de academische coördinator van de masteropleiding (LL.M.) European law. Hij doceert Mededingingsrecht in dit programma, het Advanced LL.M. programma European and International Business Law, alsook in de bacheloropleiding Rechtsgeleerdheid.
Hij is (hoofd)redacteur van verschillende wetenschappelijk tijdschriften – zoals de European Competition and Regulatory Law Review (CoRe), Voetbal- en Sportjuridische Zaken (Boom) en the International Sports Law Journal (Springer) - en van de Asser International Sports Law boekenreeks (Springer).
Voor hij naar Leiden kwam in augustus 2016, was Van Rompuy senior onderzoeker bij het T.M.C. Asser Instituut in Den Haag en gastprofessor mededingingsbeleid en mediaregelgeving aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). In 2010-2011 was hij Visiting Fellow aan het Institute for International Economic Law van Georgetown University en werkzaam als international antitrust consultant bij de US Federal Trade Commission. In 2009 was hij ook visiting scholar aan New York University.
Van Rompuy promoveerde in 2011 met een proefschrift aan de VUB over de doelstellingen van het Europees mededingingsrecht en de rol van niet-mededingingsbelangen in de toepassing van het kartelverbod, gepubliceerd als “Economic Efficiency: The Sole Concern of Modern Antitrust Policy? Non-efficiency considerations under Article 101 TFEU” (Kluwer Law International 2012).
