Dr. Bart O. Roep is hoogleraar in de Diabetologie, Immunopathologie & Interventie en director van het National Diabetes Expertise Centrum van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum, en Visiting Professor van de Danish Diabetes Academy. Hij is ook Founding Chair en Professor of Medicine van de Afdeling Diabetes Immunologie, en Chan Soon-Shiong Shapiro Distinguished Chair in Diabetes van het Diabetes & Metabolism Research Instituut van het Beckman Research Instituut van de City of Hope in Los Angeles.

Diabetes type 1
Dr Roep’s missie is om de oorzaak van type 1 diabetes bij de mens te leren begrijpen en deze kennis te vertalen naar innovatieve immuun interventie therapieën ter genezing van type 1 diabetes.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Na zijn studie Medische Biologie aan de falculteiten Wis- en Natuurwetenschappen en Geneeskunde van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, promoveerde Roep op 12 februari 1992 aan de Universiteit Leiden op zijn proefschrift ‘T-lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes’. Na een Fellowsip van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen en een Klinische Research Fellowship van ZonMW werd dr. Roep benoemd tot hoogleraar op 15 november 2011. Zijn oratie was getiteld ‘De Nieuwe Bètacellen van de Keizer’. In 2016 begon Dr. Roep zijn avontuur bij het Diabetes & Metabolism Research Instituut van het Beckman Research Instituut van de City of Hope in Los Angeles, waar hij een groot project leidt dat moet leiden tot genezing van type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Roep ontdekte de rol van T-cellen in diabetes, met focus op immuunreacties in de mens, de ontdekking van de doelwitten van autoreactieve T-cellen, en het meten van deze T-cel responsen voor en na transplantatie van eilandjes van Langerhans, om het lot van het transplantaat in de tonvangers te leren begrijpen. Roep is ook pionier in klinische studies rond tolerantie inductie, en gen- en stamceltherapie in type 1 diabetes. Voor het toetsen van interventie therapieën richtte hij een nationaal trialplatform op. Roep is auteur van ruim 350 publicaties, en ontving meerdere prestigieuze nationale en internationale onderscheidingen, waaronder de Minkowski-prijs, een VICI award van ZonMW en een Fellowship van de KNAW.
