Research
My PhD research is part of a VICI project focusing on the role of nocebo effects in the sensitization and desensitization of insufficiently explained somatic symptoms, such as pain, itch or fatigue. In this project, the influence of negative expectations on the onset, course, and recovery of these symptoms will be investigated. These symptoms have a great impact on daily functioning of patients, and effective treatments are limited. The aim of my project is to develop an effective treatment for the desensitization of persistent insufficiently explained somatic symptoms, by using combined psychological and neurobiological methods. I’m hoping to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in insufficiently explained symptoms and to help patients suffering from these symptoms to recover.
