Olaf Dekkers is professor internal medicine, chair of the scientific board internal medicine at LUMC and visiting professor at the department clinical epidemiology in Aarhus, Denmark.
Professorship for methodology of clinical research
Its aim is to improve the quality of clinical research and to assess the validity of methods for observational research.
Application of modern epidemiological methods to internal medicine, with a primary focus on diabetes, pituitary disease and thyroid disease. Collaboration with Department of Clinical Epidemiology in Aarhus (Denmark, Prof. Henrik Toft Sørensen) to apply endocrine research to Danish nationwide covering databases. Methodological chair of the guideline development group of the European Society of Endocrinology. Involved in guidance for the performance of meta-analysis of observational studies in close collaboration with the Institute of Preventive Medicine (Prof Matthias Egger, Bern) and Medical Statistics (Prof. Doug Altman, Oxford); theoretical evaluation and validation of observational research methodology (in close collaboration with Prof. Dr. Saskia le Cessie).
Academic career
Study of medicine; study philosophy with a focus on formal logic. PhD on non-functioning pituitary tumors, November 8th 2006. Inaugural lecture 24th March 2016 ‘on truth and internal diseases’. Staff member department internal medicine and clinical epidemiology.
