Mona joined CML as a PhD candidate at the end of 2023 at the department of Industrial Ecology. Her research focuses on assessing the environmental performance of ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (OCDR) approaches using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
Professional experience
Mona obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences (Major in Environmental Biology) from Maastricht University (Netherlands) in 2021. Her bachelor thesis investigated the effects of global warming on aphidophagous ladybirds in northwestern Europe. In 2023, Mona finished the joint Master’s program Industrial Ecology (IE) from Leiden University and TU Delft. During her Master’s, her main interests were learning to use core IE tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Geographic Information System (GIS). Her master thesis aimed at contributing to the global efforts targeting food loss and waste (FLW) generation by quantifying unavoidable FLW of fruits and vegetables at a global scale and investigating potential valorisation pathways.
In late 2023, Mona started a PhD at the Department of Industrial Ecology of CML.
Research topic
Mona’s PhD aims at assessing the environmental impacts of ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (OCDR) approaches using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This will allow to evaluate the technical readiness and the potential of upscaling of these approaches. Her PhD is part of the EU-funded project on Strategies for the Evaluation and Assessment of Ocean-based Carbon Dioxide Removal (SEAO2-CDR).
