Short CV

Mariëlle Linting works as an associate professor at the institute of Education and Child Studies at Leiden University. She graduated in Child and Family Studies (MSc, cum laude) at Leiden University, where she also did her PhD-project on categorical data analysis. She got her PhD degree in 2007.

Teaching

Mariëlle is an enthusiastic teacher, who takes a challenge in teaching students things they do not particularly want to learn. In the courses on statistics and research methods she teaches at Education and Child Studies, she certainly finds that challenge. She enjoys teaching the most when students who struggle the most with the material start to see the light. Her most important goal as a teacher is to activate students when learning complicated subjects so that they gain confidence and, in the end, find their own enthusiasm for scientific research.

Research

Mariëlle’s research projects cover a broad substantive range, always with a solid methodological base. She specializes in research methods for data that do not meet the assumptions of standard analysis methods (such as linearity of relations and normal distributions). In that line, she studied applications of non-linear regression and non-linear principal components analysis on categorical data. She also contributed to several meta-analyses.

Mariëlle takes the most pleasure in doing research in collaboration with others, especially researchers with specific substantive expertise. Within such collaborations, she contributed to over 40 scientific papers that cover a broad range of subjects concerning parenting, childcare, and development, such as quality of nonmaternal childcare, adoption, attachment, parenting interventions, and child abuse.

Administration

Mariëlle likes to combine her work as a teacher and researcher with management. Since 2010, she took on several administrative functions, such as chair of the programme group Research Methods & Statistics, and (shared) chair of the Education and Child Studies’ Ethics Review Board.

Since 2018, Mariëlle is Director of Studies in the Institute Board. In this role, she commits herself to open and transparent communication, and creating a comfortable environment, where people can work based on trust in students as well as colleagues. Her most important goals for the teaching programme are promoting an active learning attitude in students and implementing blended learning in a sustainable and didactically supported way.
