About Joseph
In November 2017 I began my PhD research in the Health, Medical and Neuropsychology Unit as a part of Prof. Evers’ Vici project, “The power of expectations: Unraveling the role of nocebo effects in the sensitization of somatic symptoms.” My research focuses on identifying the neurobiological mechanisms underlying nocebo effects on pain and itch, through the use of pharmacological inductions, associative learning, and neuroimaging (fMRI). My goal is to identify the neural circuitry which translates learning processes into measurable nocebo responses. I work in close collaboration with the rest of the Vici team, under the supervision of Dr. Kaya Peerdeman, Dr. Judy Veldhuijzen, and Prof. Dr. Andrea Evers.
I am originally from Seattle, Washington, U.S.A., and have lived in The Netherlands since 2015. While I miss hiking in the mountains near my home, I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people and experience a new culture while continuing to develop my skills as a researcher.
