Pathology
Research goals: the identification of genes involved in either the progression, or the natural self-limitation of renal and vascular fibrosis and in transplantation to design new treatment modalities. Improvement of islets of Langerhans transplantation for type I diabetes mellitus. Early selection of patients at risk for the development of progressive vascular or renal disease, or chronic allograft rejection.
Current themes: Identification of novel genes either predictive for, or involved in the development of progressive renal or vascular disease and linkage of gene polymorphisms to these candidate genes. Selective gene silencing (in vivo and in vitro) of candidate genes involved in progressive renal failure. Feto-maternal microchimerism in systemic autoimmune disease. Clinical application of transplantation of islets of Langerhans as an additional treatment of patients with type I diabetes.
