Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Bowel cancer affects one in twenty in the Dutch population and is the most deadly form of cancer after lung cancer. Prof Hardwick is researching new methods of detecting bowel cancer and remove them in an “organ sparing” manner. His research also focusses on unravelling the molecular development of bowel cancer.

Academic career

James Hardwick was educated in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine in England. He moved to Amsterdam in 1999 and on the 25th September 2002 received a PhD from the University of Amsterdam with a thesis entitled “Molecular Mechanisms in Colon Cancer”. He left Amsterdam for Leiden in 2007 to continue his research. His areas of research interest are the role of the BMP signalling pathway in the development and progression of bowel cancer, chemoprevention of bowel cancer, new endoscopic techniques to detect bowel cancer precursors and minimally invasive techniques to remove precursors of bowel cancer. He held his inaugural lecture with the title “Colon cancer through the looking glass” on September 18 2015.
