Studies and career
Ilya Kokorin was born on 29 May 1987 in the small Siberian town of Krasnoyarsk-26, which after the collapse of the USSR was renamed Zheleznogorsk. He studied law and history at Tomsk State University (Russia), comparative constitutional law at Central European University (Hungary), and civil and commercial law at Leiden University (the Netherlands). Alongside his academic pursuits, he has over eight years' experience working as a lawyer at national and international law firms.
In March 2017, Dr Kokorin came to the Netherlands to work as a lecturer in the department of Company Law (Ondernemingsrecht) at Leiden Law School. Over a period of two years, he gave lectures on international insolvency law, comparative corporate law and international commercial law. In February 2019, Kokorin embarked on his academic career as a PhD candidate (promovendus) at Leiden University's Department of Financial Law under the supervision of Professor Matthias Haentjens and Professor Reinout Vriesendorp. This position was funded by the Hazelhoff Van Huet Foundation and the Meijers Research Institute.
Dr Kokorin gives lectures on banking and financial transactions (private international law aspects, security rights in financial transactions, restructuring of financial obligations, etc.), capital markets (market abuse, ‘crypto-regulation’, primary and secondary markets) and general EU financial law. He also supervises bachelor's and master's theses.
Dr Kokorin is an active participant in the University of Oxford's Digital Assets Project. He is a member of III NextGen, Younger Academics Network of Insolvency Law (YANIL) of INSOL Europe, Young Researchers Group of the European Banking Institute (EBI), and chairs the Early Researcher Academics group at INSOL International. He coaches Leiden University teams in the Ian Fletcher International Insolvency Law Moot and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Financial Law.
Research
Dr Kokorin’s expertise and interests lie at the intersection of financial, insolvency and corporate law. His PhD research focused on the insolvency of enterprise groups, including banking groups, and the role of intragroup financial arrangements (e.g. cross-guarantees and intragroup loans) in corporate restructuring and insolvency. Given the comparative nature of this research, Dr Kokorin benefited from research stays at the Commercial Law Centre at Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford (UK) and the St. John’s School of Law (USA).
During his tenure at Leiden University, he has co-authored two books in collaboration with Professor Bob Wessels: 'Cross-Border Protocols in Insolvencies of Multinational Enterprise Groups' (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2021) and 'European Union Regulation on Insolvency Proceedings: An Introductory Analysis' (Alexandria: American Bankruptcy Institute, 2018). He has written a number of articles for academic journals such as the International Insolvency Review, the Journal of Corporate Law Studies, the European Review of Private Law, the Capital Markets Law Journal, the European Business Organization Law Review, the European Company and Financial Law Review and the European Business Law Review.
His upcoming publications include 'Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation: Law and Technology' (Hart Publishing, 2024), edited in collaboration with Louise Gullifer and Matthias Haentjens and 'Intra-Group Financing and Enterprise Group Insolvency: Law and Practice' (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2024).
