Since 2009 Evert de Jonge is head of the department of Intensive Care at the Leiden University Medical Center. He is also member of the board of the Dutch National Intensive Care Evaluation registry (NICE) and chair of the section Intensive Care of the Dutch Society of Internal Medicine.

Research focusses on the influence of hyperoxia en dysnatremia on outcome of ICU patients and on infection prevention by Selective deconatmination of the Digestive Tract (SDD)

Academic career

In 2000 he achieved his PhD on ‘Pathophysiology and management of coagulation disorders in Critical Care’. The title of his inaugural lecture was 'Kwaliteit van Intensive Care Over meting, interpretatie en gevolgen'
