Eva Polman joined the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Law as an Uytenbogaert PhD candidate in September 2022. Within the Chair on Tolerance (Uytenbogaert chair, established by the Stichting Leerstoel Uytenbogaert) she conducts research on (in)tolerance, citizenship and the civil defence of democracy, and also teaches on these topics.

Eva Polman joined Leiden University in September 2022 as a PhD candidate at the Faculties of Law and Humanities.
She obtained a bachelor's degree in law from the UvA, followed a minor in Entrepreneurship at the Amsterdam Business School and studied for six months at the University of Stellenbosch.
After completing internships at the Dutch Embassy in Pretoria, cultural debate centre the Nieuwe Poort and law firm Prakken d'Oliveira Human Rights Lawyers, she concluded her studies with a Master's degree in Constitutional and Administrative Law, including additional courses from the Master's degree in Philosophy of Culture and Governance at the VU. Prior to her PhD, Eva worked as a board member at Stichting Rechtswinkel Migranten and as a lawyer at the Electoral Council.
Research
Eva's doctoral research, conducted within the Chair of Tolerance, is connected to discussions on democratic self-defence and democratic citizenship. More specifically, her research focuses on the concept of (in)tolerance and citizenship in Hannah Arendt's political thought.
Furthermore, the research is part of the research programme The Legitimacy and Effectiveness of Law & Governance in a World of Multilevel Jurisdictions (LELG), one of the research programmes of the E.M. Meijers Institute (FdR). The research is conducted under the supervision of Professor B.R. Rijpkema (FdR and FGW) and Dr T.E.M. Krijger (FGW).
