Bastiaan Rijpkema is a legal philosopher and lawyer. He is professor of Jurisprudence at the Institute for the Interdisciplinary study of the law (Faculty of Law), where he holds the chair in Jurisprudence, with a specialisation in Theory and Methods of Law in an Interdisciplinary Context. He is also Endowed Professor of Tolerance (Uytenbogaert-chair, established by the Stichting Leerstoel Uytenbogaert) at the Institute for Area Studies (Faculty of Humanities).

Bastiaan Rijpkema is a legal philosopher and lawyer. He is professor of Jurisprudence at the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Law (Faculty of Law), where he holds the chair in Jurisprudence, with a specialisation in Theory and Methods of Law in an Interdisciplinary Context. Rijpkema serves as the Scientific Director of the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Law.
Rijpkema is also Endowed Professor of Tolerance (Uytenbogaert-chair, established by the Stichting Leerstoel Uytenbogaert) at the Institute for Area Studies (Faculty of Humanities).
His most recent books are Militant Democracy: The Limits of Democratic Tolerance (Routledge, 2018), and, in Dutch, Een Nieuw Commentaar op de Grondwet (co-editor). In 2022, he edited a special section in the European Constitutional Law Review on recent developments in het field of militant democracy, together with Angela Bourne (Roskilde).
For the Dutch edition of Militant Democracy he was awarded the prize for the best Dutch political book of the year in 2016, the Prinsjesboekenprijs. In 2017 he won the New Scientist Wetenschapstalentprijs 2017 (New Scientist Science Talent Prize). For other publications such as journal articles and book chapters, please see under ‘Publications’.
Rijpkema teaches and coordinates teaching in courses on legal philosophy, methodology and militant democracy in the faculties of Law and Humanities. From September 2021 to September 2024 he served as the Director of Studies for the Leiden Law School’s Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
