Erik Klok is Professor of Medicine and internist vascular medicine specialist in the Leiden University Medical Center. He is head of the residence program of vascular medicine, medical lead of the Anticoagulation Clinic Leiden and guest scientist at the University of Mainz (Germany). He chairs the LUMC committee Good Research Practice and committee for Selection and Admission of the Bachelor and Master programma of Medicine, as well as the Dutch Society of Vascular Medicine, Dutch Thrombosis Network, EXPERT-PE Europe and is chair elect of the ESC workgroup on pulmonary circulation and right ventricular function.

Vascular medicine
Erik Klok has been appointed professor of Medicine and in particular vascular medicine. One of the main aims of his studies is the development and validation of efficient diagnostic algorithms for suspected venous thrombosis, using novel imaging tests for more accurate diagnosis in complex situations. Also, he is involved in studies aimed at improving the care for hemodynamic compromised patients with acute pulmonary embolism. Standardized risk stratification, optimal use of advanced reperfusion techniques and a dedicated multidisciplinary approach should lead to improves survival. A final aim of his studies is to measure and evaluate long-term healthcare outcomes in venous thrombosis patients, and use these measurements to implement value based health care.
Scientific career
Erik Klok achieved his PhD degree with honors on March 3rd 2010 (“Pulmonary embolism: diagnostic management and prognosis”; (https://ap.lc/bpMrq). He gave his inaugural lecture entitled “Venous thromboembolism anno 2023: less is more” on March 10th 2023.
