Denny van der Vlist is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Political Science.
Denny van der Vlist is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Political Science.
His research focuses on the effects of scale on political competition and what this means for present-day democracy. His PhD project is part of a larger research project Downsize my Democracy (PI: Dr. Wouter Veenendaal). His research focusses on the effects of scale on political competition within subnational communities. His research method will have a mixed-method design as it includes both quantitative methods as qualitative methods within a diverse set of European democracies.
Before joining the institute as a PhD candidate, he was a lecturer of Political Science at Leiden University. He obtained a BSc in Political Science (2019) and a MSc in Political Science with the specialization Parties, Parliaments and Democracy (2020) at Leiden University. His master thesis on patterns in post-parliamentary careers was shortlisted for the Institute's Master thesis prize of 2020.
