Bart Joosen (1963) has been a Professor of Financial Law and affiliated with the Institute of Private Law, Hazelhoff Centre for Financial Law, since 1 July 2023. He studied Dutch Law at Tilburg University, where he obtained his PhD on the topic of 'Transfer of businesses in bankruptcy' in 1998. From 1987 to 1991, he was an Assistant Professor at Tilburg Law School's Department of Private Law. From 1990 onwards, he combined this teaching position with his role as an in-house lawyer at Philips Electronics in Eindhoven. From 1992 to 2023, he worked as a lawyer in financial supervisory law practice in Amsterdam. From 2012 to 2023, he was part-time Professor of Prudential Supervision and Financial Law at the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
Professor Joosen's research focuses on the prudential supervision of banks, insurers, investment firms and other financial institutions, the European System of Financial Supervision and the Banking Union. His areas of interest include issues of the Single Supervisory Mechanism and the Single Resolution Mechanism. Since 2020, his research has focused on sustainable finance and how climate risks are handled in the financial sector.
