Annelou van Gijn's teaching and research focus on prehistoric technology, ancient crafts, and the reconstruction of the cultural biography of objects, employing experimental archaeology and microscopy. She is one of the leading microwear specialists and as such participates in several international projects.

Annelou van Gijn (Amsterdam, 1956) studied anthropology and archaeology at Washington State University Pullman (US) and the University of Groningen. She obtained her PhD (cum laude) at Leiden University in 1990 (Thesis title: The wear and tear of flint: principles of functional analysis applied to Dutch Neolithic assemblages).
From 1986-2012 she has been (senior)-lecturer at Leiden University where she also directs the Laboratory for Artefact Studies. In 2008 she was appointed professor by special appointment at the University of Groningen, a position she left when she became chair of Archaeological Material Culture Studies at Leiden University in 2012.
Her teaching and research focus on prehistoric technology, ancient crafts, and the reconstruction of the cultural biography of objects, employing experimental archaeology and microscopy. She is one of the leading microwear specialists and as such participates in several international projects.
Most of her work is centered on the Neolithic of the Rhine/Meuse delta but she regularly partakes in projects in the Caribbean area, the Near East, Greece and the US.
She was team leader in the ESF project Early Agricultural Remnants and Technical Heritageand co-applicant of the NWO projects Ancestral Mounds and Uncovering North Holland’s Neolithic Treasure Chest.
She is currently involved in an experimental house building project in the Flevopolder (NL) and in the study of personal ornaments from the Neolithic and Bronze Age.
