Prof. dr. Anne M. Stiggelbout is Professor of Medical Decision Making at the Department of Biomedical Data Sciences at the LUMC. She is the initiator of the Innovation profile in Health Strategy and Quality of Care, member of the Permanent Committee for Academic Practice and member of the LUMC Value-Based Health Care Roadmap group. She was chairman of the International Society for Medical Decision Making of 2011-2012. She also obtained a VIDI scholarship from NWO for research into the valuation of health.

Prof. Anne M. Stiggelbout is professor of Medical Decision Making at the Department of Biomedical Data Sciences, Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), the Netherlands. She is Chair of the medical research profile Innovation in Health Strategy and Quality of Care, member of the 'Vaste Commissie voor Wetenschapsbeoefening' (Research Advisory Board), and member of the Value-Based Health Care Roadmap group. 
She was President of the international Society for Medical Decision Making in 2011-2012. She received a VIDI-award of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research NWO Innovational Research Incentives Scheme, for a program entitled 'Health state valuations: bridging the gap between the imagined and the real', in 2004.

Shared decision making

The research and teaching of professor Stiggelbout relate to shared decision making and risk communication, value-based health care, and clinimetrics and psychometrics. She has received grants from among others the Dutch Cancer Society and the Netherlands Organisations for Scientific Research (NWO) and Medical Research (ZonMw), on patient preference assessment, patient empowerment, and shared decision-making and risk communication, normative aspects of decision making, as well as on quality of life measurement and clinimetrics.

Her research fits the topics Health Services Research, Prevention and Treatment ('Gezondheidszorgonderzoek, preventie en behandeling') and Personalised medicine of the National Science Agenda (NWA).

She has had widespread impact on quality of care, on patient-centredness in particular, with the implementation of shared decision making, locally, regionally, and nationally in the Netherlands. Her group has developed both elearnings and training workshops for professionals for this purpose.

Academic career

Anne Stiggelbout graduated from Wageningen University in 1987, after which she spent 15 months at the WHO cancer institute IARC in Lyon, as a trainee in cancer epidemiology. This was followed by a period as research fellow in epidemiology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. She left for Leiden University in 1991 to start her PhD research in medical decision making. In 1995 she obtained her PhD at the Leiden University Medical Center ('Trade-offs between quality and length of life. Methodological aspects of outcome valuation in cancer patients'), after which she joined the faculty of the Medical Decision Making unit at LUMC. She became associate professor in 2000 and full professor in 2007. Her inaugural lecture in 2008 was entitled 'Kiezen of delen? Patiënten, percepties en preferenties' (Choosing or sharing? Patients, perceptions, and preferences).
In 2012 she joined the Faculty of the NFU Executive Master Quality and Safety of Patient Care for which she developed the module Patient-Centered Care. For this master she also served on the Master Committee (Opleidingscommissie) from 2014-2017 and still serves as Examiner.

Prizes and honourable appointments

Anne Stiggelbout received the Eugene Saenger Distinguished Service Award of the Society for Medical Decision making, in 2015. In that same year she received Vitaal Bokaal 2015, the Ambassador award of the LUMC women’s network.

Prof. Stiggelbout has been active on various scientific boards in The Netherlands, e.g. of the Organisation for Health Research and Development - Medical Sciences (ZonMw), and of the Dutch Cancer Society. She has been member of the Committee on Population Screening of the Health Council (Gezondheidsraad), from 2013-2017.
