Aim of the research

The aim of the research is to evaluate innovations in medical education. This includes new technologies, such as extended reality, but also new modalities and applications of digital assessment. The research takes place within the research group of the Centre for Research in Medical Education (Onderwijs Expertise Centrum) of the LUMC.

Faculty development is another important research topic. To increase the quality of education, teachers need to develop, learn about current insights in didactics and how to apply them. This is important in bachelor’s and master’s education, but also in medical specialty training. The effect of faculty development on medical specialty training and the optimization of training is one of the targets of the research.

Academic career

Alexandra Langers studied Medicine at Leiden University. After finishing her bachelor’s degree, she spent 12 months in Paris to perform fundamental research in Hôpital tenon, INSERM U64. She has been working as a Gastroenterologist since 2007. In 2012 she defended her thesis entitled “Matrix Metalloproteinases in Colorectal Cancer Development and Prognosis”.

From the start of her career she is actively involved in medical education. She obtained a Senior Teaching Qualification (Senior Kwalificatie Onderwijs, SKO) and became a member of the Leiden Teachers’ Academy in 2020. She supervised PhD candidates performing educational research.
