ReCNTR
ReCNTR is an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to the advancement of multimodal and audiovisual research methods in the social sciences and humanities. It is supported by the Institute of Cultural Anthropology, the Institute of Political Science, the Center of the Arts in Society at Leiden University, the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts and by the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Additionally, the Leiden Institute of Area Studies is an affiliate institute of ReCNTR.
ReCNTR is founded on the recognition of a ‘post-textual turn’ in our disciplines. Its goal is to bring together researchers who believe that making—such as filmmaking, photography, drawing, and other types of making—are modes of thinking and hence crucial approaches for social science and the humanities, along side more traditional qualitative and quantitive methods.
‘Making’ is not understood as separate from, or in dialogue with, scientific work, but as a practice and methodology of scientific work. ReCNTR’s concrete aim is to provide physical and intellectual space for young and more established scholars in the social sciences and humanities, as well as artists and makers interested in engaging with social science and humanities, to facilitate the development of a joint research agenda.
