Vincent Delhomme speaks at the conference on European Judicial Narratives in Brussels
On 19 October 2023, Vincent Delhomme spoke at the conference on ‘European Judicial Narratives’, hosted by the University of Louvain Saint-Louis in Brussels. Vincent participated in the panel devoted to the reception of these judicial narratives in the European legal epistemic community.
The concept of ‘European Judicial Narratives’ aims to encapsulate a neglected aspect of the European Court of Justice’s activity, that of a creator of narratives on European integration that transcend its judgments, and what is traditionally accounted for in traditional legal doctrinal analysis. Through obiter dicta, Advocate General Opinions, but also press releases or public interventions of its judges, the Court tells us an articulate story about Europe, its meaning and representations. Vincent’s intervention focused on the production of these judicial narratives in the field of internal market law. Vincent called for a critical analysis of the Court’s narratives regarding the state of gambling in the EU, which is increasingly at odds with the current positive image and prevalence of this activity in the population. He also showed how the narrative developed by the Court on food heritage may explain national resistance to EU food law.
The research project on Judicial Narratives contains three edited volumes, the last one of which may be found here.
