Vincent Delhomme successfully defends his PhD on the regulation of lifestyle risks in EU law
On Friday 2 June 2023, Vincent Delhomme, Assistant professor at the Europe Institute at Leiden Law School, successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled : ‘Regulating lifestyle risks in EU law: Promoting health in a diverse market’.
The thesis, prepared under the supervision of Prof. Anne-Lise Sibony at UCLouvain, Belgium, constitutes the first horizontal analysis of the impact of EU law on health promotion policies adopted at the EU and national level. It brings together legal and policy elements relevant to five key behavioural risk factors to health: tobacco, alcohol, food and illicit drugs consumption, as well as gambling. It shows that, under its current constitutional framework of competence, the EU is ill-equipped to deal with the multi-faceted nature of lifestyle risks.
In addition to Prof. Anne-Lise Sibony, the jury was composed of Prof. Alberto Alemanno (HEC Paris), Prof. Loïc Azoulai (Sciences Po Paris), Prof. Henri Culot (UCLouvain), Prof. Olivier De Schutter (UCLouvain) and Prof. Amandine Garde (University of Liverpool).
