Vincent Delhomme discusses upcoming EU food labelling reforms
Front-of-pack nutrition labelling, origin labelling, regulation of voluntary green claims made by food business operators: the EU is currently looking into various reforms of the legal framework for food information to consumers. The goal: healthier and more sustainable diets.
Vincent Delhomme participated as a panellist at the conference Meet&Greet with the regulators: crisis management, sustainability and consumer protection in the food sector, organised by the Belgian Food Law Organisation. The conference gathered governmental representatives at the Belgian and EU level, civil society organisations and academics.
Vincent addressed key upcoming reforms of the EU food labelling legal framework: the adoption of a common and mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labelling scheme, the expansion of origin information on food packages and the regulation of voluntary green claims made by food companies. He stressed the need to better study and understand the interactions between various labels (Nutri-Score, Eco-Score, animal welfare, origin, etc.). He also expressed caution as regards the provision of more origin information, due to the likelihood of consumers being misled.
