Green Light from the Advisory Board Legal Technologies program
Technological developments are rapidly advancing. The Leiden Legal Technologies Program was on the agenda of the Advisory Committee at their second meeting held on 15 October. The decision to start the program in January 2021 was taken unanimously. It was the official moment to announce the completion of the preparations for the Leiden Legal Technologies Program. The starting date is 22 January.
Program
The Program comprises four courses, and a capstone project. The courses address relevant topics with regard to Legal Technologies. Examples are: automated decision making, legal research & legal fact finding, compliance with information requests and how to deal with smart contracts, blockchain and contract analysis.
Capstone Project
In the capstone project, participants apply knowledge obtained in the courses to address real world problems. Participants may submit their own organizational struggles as a case for the capstone project. In addition, the Advisory Board has provided several interesting cases which can be addressed for participants without their own cases. An example of a case is: How to determine the applicable rules for specific technologies? For instance, in the Netherlands, technologies could be subjected to the ‘Wet Financieel Toezicht’ (Wft), then the competent authority would be the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). However, if this is not subjected to the Wft, then the AFM has no authority with respect to that technology. In summary, determining which rules are applicable to a certain technology can have major judicial consequences.
Advisory Board
The Advisory Board expressed the need to bring together the judicial world and the technological world. To achieve this, education is necessary. Therefore, an adequate understanding of Legal Technologies is an important step. Once more the Advisory Committee stressed the convergence of Law and Technology. The future will show to what extent the Leiden Legal Technologies Program will achieve this goal. Expectations are high.
