A rapidly developing international friendship
Staff and student mobility, a cooperative education programme and the possibility of a joint research center in artificial intelligence and data science. A delegation from Chinese partner XJTU paid a fruitful visit to the Faculty of Science in the last week of October.
‘Leiden University and XJTU have rapidly developed a very close friendship in the past year,’ said Hester Bijl, vice rector magnificus of Leiden University, during the visit from Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) on 30 October. ‘XJTU is one of the most important partners for Leiden in China and we are looking forward to broaden and deepen the collaborations.’
Four presidential visits
In the past year, XJTU and Leiden University paid no less than four presidential level visits to each other. Purpose of the most recent visit was to broaden and deepen the collaborations between two universities, for which a memory of understanding was signed between both universities.
Staff and student mobility
XJTU especially wishes to join forces in the field of science. Therefore, multiple agreements were also signed with the Leiden Faculty of Science. Goal of these agreements is to facilitate staff and student mobility on all levels, including bachelors, masters and PhDs, as well as visiting professors and other scientists. During the most recent visit, a new agreement was signed on a cooperative education programme between the Faculty of Science and Qian Xuesen College, XJTU’s honours college. Earlier in October, LUMC also signed an agreement with XJTU about student exchange.
Joint research center computer sciences
The Faculty of Science and XJTU further agreed on exploring the possibility of developing a joint research center in the fields of artificial intelligence and data science. Both parties appointed key people to follow up on this initiative.
The Chinese delegation was headed by XJTU provost and vice president, Professor Zheng Qinghua. It also included XJTU key persons in the field of science and internationalization: Professor Sen Yang, executive dean of the College of Qian Xuesen; Professor Hong Gao, vice dean of the School of Science; Professor Qiuling Chao, deputy director of the Department of International Cooperation & Exchange and Juan Wang, assistant dean of the College of Qian Xuesen.
