Public Administration at the front edge of Online Teaching Innovation
This semester the institute of Public Administration launches two SPOCs about Public Values & Ethics and Research design. A SPOC is a Small Private Online Course, the ‘smaller brother’ of a MOOC. This is the first time at FGGA that on campus students can follow their on-campus course fully online. 13 Teachers University-wide are involved in developing SPOCs together with the Centre for Innovations’ Online Learning Lab as part of the ICT in Education programme.
Public Administration is an early adopter in online teaching: besides these two SPOCs, two other online projects are in the making, including a MOOC about European policy implementation by Professor Bernard Steunenberg.
Online teaching has a different dynamic than offline teaching. To fully understand the new dynamics of an online (international) classroom, teachers and student-assistants have received an online training ‘How to Teach Online’. Both classes will have webinars (webseminar) which is also a first. The format and features that come with these kind of courses, are evaluated by Iclon together with the Centre for Innovation.
SPOCs that have started:
- Public Values & Ethics (5 EC course offered as part of the Erasmus Exchange program & PA Minors)
- Research Design (5 EC course offered as part of the pre-master for PA and CSM)
