Dual appointment of seven new Medical Delta professors
Seven new Medical Delta professors revealed their research plans in a lecture marathon on 21 June. The professors at Leiden University, the LUMC, Delft University of Technology and the Erasmus Medical Centre Rotterdam operate at the interface between life sciences and health and technology.
Medical Delta
Their combined expertise in technology and healthcare is bringing personalised medicines and more effective treatments a step closer. The Medical Delta appointment gives these seven professors a dual appointment; they will each be affiliated to two universities. Five of the seven are professors in Leiden: Cock van Duijn, Thomas Hankemeier, Rob Nelissen, Marileen Dogterom and Corrie Marijnen.
Medical Delta event
The appointment was made during the Medical Delta event in Delft attended by 350 scientists, medical specialists and professionals from the public sector. It is the second time that these dual appointments have been made. The first occasion was in 2014 when eleven Medical Delta professors were appointed.
Innovations in treatment
The collaboration between the Medical Delta professors appointed in 2014 - also including medical specialists from Leiden and Rotterdam and engineers from Delft - has already generated a number of innovations. These include the development of 3D prints of the human body and in the field of minimally invasive treatments. These kinds of surgeries leave smaller scars and patients are able to recover more quickly.
