The city as a mine has the future
In an (Dutch) interview with the regional Leiden newspaper “Leidsch Dagblad”, Ruben Huele and Ester van der Voet talk about the recently started project PUMA (Prospecting the Urban Mines of Amsterdam).
The consortium of CML, de Waag Society Amsterdam, TU Delft and Metabolic aim at producing a “geological” map of the city of Amsterdam: the stocks of iron, copper and aluminium in the built environment, which in due time can be recycled into secondary materials. The project fits within the concept of the circular economy, an image of a society where resources are cycled indefinitely, thereby reducing the need for primary materials production.
