Discussion Seminar Israel-Gaza
On Wednesday 18 October, Prof.dr.mr. Maurits Berger, professor of Islam and the West, and Prof. dr. Sarah Cramsey, professor of Judaism and Diaspora Studies, invited International Studies students for an information session about the ongoing situation in Israel and Gaza.
They provided insights into the history of Israel and Palestine; how the Israeli state was established and the effects this had on the region. The two professors talked about the diaspora, the dreams, the politics and the laws that have given shape to the situation in the region, as well as its instability.
During the Q&A session with the students, topics such as ethical resistance, a broader understanding of the human implications and obligations when encountering tragedies were discussed. Questions on how to receive balanced news reporting on the situation and how to critically think were answered.
It was a very successful event, showcasing how difficult conversations could be had at an academic institution. Students were invited to continue academic conversations to broaden their knowledge, while also conducting their own research on the past and current events in Israel and Gaza. Our event drew the attention of the University Board which mentioned it in their newsletter contribution, as well as from the Minister of Education, Robbert Dijkgraaf. He paid a visit to the campus The Hague on 27 October to talk to students and staff about how the events affected them and how academics could discuss sensitive topics.
