Toward the Abolition of Photography’s Imperial Rights
Last Tuesday, on the 17th of January, students gathered for the public discussion “Toward the Abolition of Photography’s Imperial Rights”, chaired and conducted by Ariella Aïsha Azoulay.
Ariella is a Professor of Modern Culture/Media and Comparative Literature at Brown University, and is also known as a film essayist and curator of archives and photographic exhibitions.
Students and practitioners pondered with Professor Azoulay about the origins of photography, as she invited the audience to question our right to document the faces and lives of faraway places that are not ours. Can this be considered as a way of performance activism, or rather showcases an act of imperial violence?
We massively thank Professor Azoulay of bringing her expertise to the Leiden community!
