Violence and Violence Prevention
Education
The Violence and Violence Prevention research group at Leiden University focuses on understanding and preventing violence in modern societies.
The group offers two key educational programmes: the Minor Violence Studies and the Governance of Violence specialisation within the Master’s in Crisis and Security Management (CSM). These programmes aim to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of violence and its prevention, drawing from interdisciplinary perspectives in criminology, sociology, psychology, and public health.
- Minor Violence Studies
The minor Violence Studies focuses on interpersonal violence, including physical and sexual violence. It examines the origins, mechanisms, and social contexts of violence, while also exploring resilience and response strategies. The minor prepares students to think critically about violence and equips them with the tools to understand and address this pressing societal issue. - MSc Crisis and Security Management - specialisation Governance of Violence
This specialisation focuses on the governance and policy frameworks that address violence. Students explore the roles of different actors at local, national, and international levels in responding to and managing violence, with an emphasis on designing effective violence-reduction strategies and peacebuilding policies.
