Cyber Security Governance

Education

The Cyber Security Governance research group contributes significantly to the educational programmes at Leiden University. By integrating cutting-edge research into the classroom, we ensure that students engage with the latest developments in the field of cyber security, governance, and ethics.

Teaching in bachelor’s and master’s programmes

The research group’s expertise is also embedded in the curriculum of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs:

  • Bachelor Security Studies: Students explore the governance of modern security challenges, including the strategic and societal implications of cyber threats.
  • Bachelor Cybersecurity & Cybercrime: This Dutch-taught programme draws on insights from the research group to provide students with a solid understanding of the legal and societal aspects of cybercrime and security.
  • MSc Crisis and Security Management, specialisation: Cyber Security Governance: Directly linked to the research group, this master’s specialisation equips students with advanced skills in analysing and managing cyber threats from a governance perspective.
  • Executive Master Cyber Security: The research group contributes to this programme by offering expert knowledge on balancing technical innovation with governance strategies.
  • Minor Cybersecurity & Cybercrime: Designed for bachelor’s students from diverse disciplines, this minor leverages the expertise of the research group to explore key concepts in cyber security and digital crime prevention.

Enhancing learning through research

Students benefit from the research group’s active involvement in developing course content and supervising student projects. Research insights on topics such as critical infrastructure protection, artificial intelligence in cyber defence, and global cyber policies inform case studies, simulations, and real-world assignments.

The research group also provides students with opportunities to participate in workshops, internships, and collaborative projects with public and private sector partners. These experiences allow students to apply their academic knowledge to practical challenges and to build a professional network in the field of cyber security governance.
