About the conference

Local government is of increasing importance for citizens. In many European countries, the same logic of party government that we have on the national level is transferred to the local level. Yet we know surprisingly little about how party government works at the local level. Local government has a smaller scale and is limited by the number of tasks that are decentralized, which may change how party politics functions at this level. This workshop focuses on party politics at the local level: how it works and what its limitations are. We welcome papers that examine all aspects of local party politics, including papers that examine:

1)    How parties and citizens interact in elections campaigns and voting decisions,
2)    How parties select candidates and draft manifestos,
3)    How parties operate in the local council,
4)    How parties operate when negotiating for or occupying local executive office.

We welcome papers with different methodological approaches, from qualitative fieldwork to quantitative text analysis.
