Abstract
Vibrational spectroscopy is a label-free, chemically selective tool for studying reactions at electrochemical interfaces and within microfluidic environments. However, coupling infrared (IR) based techniques to fluidic conditions is challenging and requires careful consideration of the large attenuation of infrared radiation due to strong solvent absorption. This talk presents our advances in infrared spectroelectrochemistry, IR spectromicroscopy, and infrared chemical imaging. Our research has focused on the theoretical development and application of electrochemical attenuated total reflection surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) as exemplified by our mechanistic studies of methanol and ammonia electrooxidation on nickel surfaces. Concurrently, our work at the Canadian Light Source, resulting in the commissioning of a new endstation at the mid-IR beamline, will be highlighted through the demonstration of IR imaging of model on-chip and on-flow chemical reactions in microfluidic devices.
