About the panel
German chancellor Olaf Scholz called for early elections after the collapse of his coalition government and the loss of a confidence vote in parliament. The elections are scheduled for the 23rd of February and may lead to important policy shifts. Will Scholz’ Social Democrats win seats or will the political gamble of early elections turn sour for the party? Will the far-right Alternative für Deutschland make further electoral gains, potentially complicating coalition formation? And what consequences may the elections bring for the European Union, in which Germany plays a leading role? Leiden’s Institute of Political Science brings together five scholars to address these and further questions.
