Tilko Swalve is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics at the Institute of Political Science.
Tilko Swalve is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics at the Institute of Political Science at Leiden University. His research interests lie in the interactions between politics and law, with a focus on the role of courts in the political process and the behavior of judges. He is also broadly interested in comparative political institutions, comparative political behavior, and political economy.
His most recent work examines how the interpersonal relations between judges influence judicial decision-making and how populist governments affect judicial institutions and the rule of law.
Prior to joining Leiden in 2024, he held postdoctoral positions at the Leibniz University Hannover and the University of Hamburg. He received a PhD in Political Science from the University of Mannheim in 2020 and holds an M.A. from the University of Mannheim and a B.A. from Free University Berlin.
