Abstract

This seminar is devoted to openness and participation in research. Together we will discuss how analogue and digitally mediated movements toward 'openness' (Open Science) and 'participation' (Citizen Science) intersect, and explore the role of STS in these developments. Over recent decades, participatory approaches have surged across science communication, policy, and practice, fostering formats like patient research, living labs, and citizen science. While STS has actively shaped and championed participatory ideals, its own engagement in practice beyond observation and critique seems to remain tentative. We aim to explore this tension by mapping connections between STS and participatory research, reflecting on the diversification of public engagement, and proposing pathways to strengthen more open and more participatory STS.
