As a first generation student, studying abroad may not be the first thing that comes to mind. It may not even have occurred to you that this is an option, or you may wonder if it is feasible in your situation. In this meeting Anouk Everts will tell you about her experiences with studying abroad. She had to overcome quite some hurdles to arrange her preferred exchange programme, but it also brought her so much! She is currently finishing her PhD, which is supervised in an international, cooperative setting by promotors from three different universities: University of Cologne in Germany, Leiden University in the Netherlands, and University College London in the UK. Also, Hung-Wah, head of the International Relations office, will inform us on the procedure and financial possibilities to realise a stay abroad.
Are you interested in Anouk's story and in meeting other first generation students? Do you want to find out more about the possibilities to study abroad? Then you should definitely join this event!
Are you the first in your family attending university? Would you like to meet people from all over the university who are, or have been, in the same situation and understand the challenges you face? Then join Leiden University’s network for first generation students and academics.
With the Leiden Empowerment Fund project we aim to share knowledge, strengths and skills and are establishing a university-wide network of first generation students and academics, connecting what is already there. We would love to welcome you at our meetings in which we will have informative sessions and the opportunity to meet up with each other to share experiences and needs.
This meeting is made possible by the donors of the Leiden University Fund/Leiden Empowerment Fund

About the Leiden Empowerment Fund
The Leiden Empowerment Fund (LEF) is made possible by the donors of the Leiden University Fund (LUF) and was a farewell gift to our former Rector Magnificus Carel Stolker. The LEF provides grants for first generation academics and there is a project for first generation students. The project for first generation students is supported and carried out by the Diversity & Inclusion Expertise Office.
