"Leiden University's Public International Law Advanced LLM programme prepared me very well for a career in academia. The LLM curriculum's breadth and rigour, illustrious Faculty members, and proximity to international tribunals and institutions, promise a unique immersion into the theory and practice of international law. During my LLM journey, in which I took the Peace, Justice and Development specialisation, I also participated in extracurricular activities such as the Leiden Journal of International Law and the International Humanitarian Law Clinic. After graduating, I joined the Centre for International Law, National University of Singapore, as a researcher in International Economic Law."

"The seminars and assessments sharpened my critical thinking and writing abilities. The instructors encouraged a generalist and inclusive outlook instead of putting students into silos. In addition, we were privileged to meet and talk to international judges in The Hague and observe the sessions of the UN International Law Commission and Human Rights Council in Geneva, among others. The entire experience not only equips me with the necessary skills but also inspires me to maintain a unique and relevant perspective in the highly dynamic academic space."

Adv LLM Public International Law

The Adv LLM in Public International Law has a large network of alumni around the globe working in international organisations such as the United Nations, courts and tribunals like the International Court of Justice, NGOs such as Amnesty International, government departments and the private sector. For example, our students have gone on to work as practicing lawyers in international dispute settlement, as diplomats negotiating treaties between states, or as advocates for human rights, environmental protection or humanitarian issues. Moreover, some of our students decide to pursue careers in academia, completing PhDs and securing positions at universities around the world.

Peace, Justice and Development Specialisation

The Peace, Justice and Development specialisation prepares our students for careers in international environmental governance, development, peace and security, and many other areas. Our students have secured jobs that allow them to address pressing global issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. They may serve in international organisations, like the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), or in NGOs, think tanks, and advocacy groups, focusing on policy development, compliance, and environmental justice.

Our students may also find opportunities that allow them to work on economic development, poverty reduction, and human rights for organisations like the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, or regional development banks. Students have similarly pursued careers in the field, working with organisations like the International Committee of the Red Cross or on UN peacekeeping missions around the world.

Career prospects Advanced LLM graduates

The Master of Advanced Studies programmes at Leiden Law School are challenging academic programmes that will prepare you for a career in law. However, this does not guarantee that upon graduation you will find employment in the Netherlands, Europe, or elsewhere. While Leiden Law School offers support in terms of career services for each programme, finding employment remains the responsibility of each individual student.

Our experience is that most of our graduates relatively easily find excellent jobs in the Netherlands, in Europe and other continents. However, it is important to note that jobs in these fields are highly competitive and that finding suitable employment may require time. Obtaining high grades in the programme will help but these will not be enough by themselves, as other criteria such as experience and language proficiency play an important role. Personal experience, expertise, former work experience, specific skills all contribute to finding a suitable position. We have seen many of our graduates eventually find the jobs they were looking for.
